Edition 03 – When less choice makes for a better trip

Travel gives us an extraordinary number of choices to make. More hotels, more room categories, more flight combinations and seemingly endless ways to spend a day once you arrive.

At first glance, that should make planning easier. In practice, it can turn a holiday into another project to manage.

We see it when clients come to us with 10 hotels saved, several possible flights and a long list of places they’ve been told they should visit. None of those options may be wrong – there are simply too many of them competing for attention.

And every option brings another decision.

One of the most valuable things we can do is make many of those decisions disappear before they ever reach the client.

That means understanding what matters for this particular trip, filtering out what doesn’t quite fit and presenting a much smaller number of options that deserve serious consideration.

Five hotels might become two because three are in the wrong location or don’t suit the way the client likes to travel. A seemingly better flight might disappear from the shortlist because its timings make the first day unnecessarily difficult.

Sometimes we’ll recommend a simpler room category because we know the difference between it and the upgrade is unlikely to matter.

The client still has a choice. They just don’t have to work through every possibility to get there.

Our role is to understand how the whole trip fits together, spot the details that could create friction and keep track of them behind the scenes.

For people who already spend much of their working week making decisions, having fewer to make on holiday can be a very welcome thing.

Sometimes travelling well simply means having less to think about.
